Living Your Favorite Book Genre
As I get older the more and more obsessed I become with reading, especially when it comes to contemporary fiction or murder mystery/thrillers. With that I’m also drawn to elements from those books that I use to decorate my home. For example, I have a book page runner on my dinning room table.
And as I proceed into my 30’s where more of my style is dialed in I realize it's time to make a change to my room. Instead of a design style such as beach, or safari, or boho, why can’t I have it be a genre of book? These were my exact thoughts while trying to see where I would like my room to go.
See Your Favorite Genre Below!
Fantasy

Love the fantasy genre? Then French Provisional is the perfect style to decorate your home. Giving a more elegant taste you find the style leans towards more curved shapes when it comes to moldings and accents both seen in furniture and the walls. Small, expensive details make all the difference which is why you need to look out for those perfect pieces. Want to decorate your book shelf? Then you better be finding a bust of a man's or women's head to tie it all together. And don't forget those silver or gold tones!
Sci-fi

Whenever I think of Sci-fi my mind goes straight to modern minimalism mixed with futuristic elements. Whites, and silvers are mostly used to keep a clean look while lighting will elevate it the next level by setting the mood. Even though the lines are clean, curved elements found in the low set furniture bring the sci-fi genre to life.
Romance

Everyone loves a good romance novel. Which is why Shabby Chic or Cottagecore is the perfect style to decorate your home. Think your grandma's old house with the soft tones, floral and wooden elements to bring the warmth and love to a room. There might even be a hint of vanilla cookies drifting through the room if you get the perfect candle.
If you can thrift as much as possible to keep to the style as well as give your favorite genre a run for it's money. Don't forget lace! Dollies will be your best friend.
Mystery

Whenever I think of mysteries the first thing that pops to mind is a cop sitting in a New York apartment downing a glass of whiskey. Around them, brick and metal pipes lining the walls. It's the perfect sterile yet homey vibe one can create to give the creepy tense vibes the mystery genre brings. Open concepts are tailored for this decorative style with pieces perfectly set in place.
Horror

Someday when I own a castle I'm definitely going to be decorating my place in the horror genre or in this case the Gothic style. Ornate furniture coated in glossy blacks and deep reds give the feeling of being on edge especially when everything is tone on tone. Don't forget everything has to be chunky too!
Historical Fiction

I don't think people give the Historical Fiction genre enough of a chance when it comes to reading, but I do think the east coats does a great job capturing it in the more traditional vintage styles you see in their homes. Wooden accents found in the beams and fireplace work well with the simplistic and functional pieces. Each piece is personal and has a place making the history of the home come to life. Don't forget to hang those black and white photos of your ancestors to nail the head on the coffin!
Classics and Literary Fiction

If you love reading the classics or literary fiction then Dark Academia is perfect for styling your home. Books, books, and more books topped with deep jewel tone colors from top to bottom, give a dark yet functional living environment. This style has seen a comeback these last few years and is one that truly never goes out of style. If you want to look smart and sophisticated while reading a book by the fire, then you must decorate your home this style.
Adventure

Nobody can pass on a good adventure which is why the rustic explorer or cabin is the style you'll want to be decorating your space if you love reading the genre. Quilts, wood accents, rope, leather and small knick knacks bring the adventure vibe to the next level. Add some pictures of your travels on the walls to bring it to the next level. Everyday will be an adventure when your home is styled using this genre as inspiration.
Dystopian

Lastly, everyone loves a good Dystopian story. Hunger Games anyone? Well if this is one of your favorite genres then you need to be decorating your home using the minimalistic style. Only really needing the essentials the room gives a clean vibe using whites while leaving the walls bare. For people who need a piece of mind when they come home this is the way to go.
Final Thoughts
If you're looking to change your space, then look to your book shelf for inspiration. Our favorite genres can be brought to life with only a few element changes to a room. Look out for new pieces and deals at thrift stores, garage sales, or online sellers. Antique stores are one of my favorite places to find a unique piece.
