How to Use Pinterest While You Write

Pinterest hit the scene back in 2010 where you could pin your ‘favorites’ to a dedicated board. This app was known mostly for decorations and food recipes, but slowly spread to other ideas and concepts. The more you liked or pinned, the more the algorithm would show you the things you favored as well as creating the ultimate search engine for hobbyists.

Back from 2012 to mostly 2017 I used Pinterest for its main purpose…home decor. But since then, my algorithm has changed. Instead, it’s filled with topics on writing or books I might love.

So when it comes to writing your next story, paper, poem, or anything related to writing, here’s why you should have Pinterest pulled up and ready to use.

Mood Boards

When writing a novel you first have to set the scene. This can include places around the world, specific architecture, or even decor found in a room. Finding pictures similar to the idea you have is great to contain in one place- especially if you are creating a mood board to go along with your story. When you need a reminder you can quickly pull it up.

Character Development

Not only do you need the scene set for your storyline, but you also need to have your characters. Through physical appearance down to the character arc you can find worksheets to develop your characters on Pinterest. There are thousands of questions to ask yourself about your characters and luckily they can all be in one spot. Having those worksheets can be super helpful in narrowing down what your characters look like, sound like, what they wear, or even their dislikes. All for free. And even better… you now have some interesting characters your reader will enjoy.

Tips and Tricks

Just like myself, I create a Pin for writers to click leading back to the blog where they can find tips and tricks on writing. Whatever topic you are needing help on can most likely be found on Pinterest. This can include places on where to publish, books to read about writing, to other people’s writing experiences. This will allow you to better your writing skills quickly and easily.

Prompts

There are times when you get writers block during a story. It’s annoying and can really bring your efforts to a halt. To get out of a writers block or even start a new scene, I highly suggest checking out writing prompts that are open ended. Once you start using them your writing will start to flow and you can quickly get back on track. Who knows they might even be your opening to a highly popular scene in your next book.

Food Research

This might be more specific to a certain type of writing, but food is where it’s at when it comes to Pinterest. Like I mentioned earlier, Pinterest first started off being known for food recipes, and it still is! If you are writing about food allergies, dishes your character makes, or even mentioning a popular restaurant, looking on Pinterest will be the way to go.

Final Thoughts

Pinterest is such a great resource when writing your story. If you haven’t set up an account, I highly suggest you do! Who knows, you might even find more ways to use it than what was mentioned above.
