Do You Have A Vacation Journal?
How often do you go on vacation and at the end of the night think to yourself, “That was so much fun, I’ll never forget this moment,” only then to forget all about it 6 months later?
We’ll that has happened to me and let me tell you I don’t want it happening again. That's why many years ago I purchased a set of small journals perfect for packing and taking with me on my next trip.
Anytime I knew I would be leaving on a trip, I would pick a notebook I felt would encompass the energy of that said trip. At the end of each night I would hunker down to relive the day, then turn off the light ready for the next day. But not as some would normally journal, no. As if I was writing an adventure story. Because guess what… I was on an adventure and what better way to practice story telling than through your own experiences!
Memory
So many people have crappy memories and it's sort of astonishing. This means forgetting even the big things such as birthdays or anniversaries. On trips, there can be big moments that happen(such as getting engaged), or the tiniest of moments that made your day(like a free coffee). Knowing this it's important to relive the day at the end of the night being as detailed as possible in your journal. In the end, all those small moments add up into one big experience you get to take with you forever. Lucky you, you get to read them over and over again.
Practice
When I say journal about your experience I mean really do some writing. Not this, "we had a good day" crap. No. Write as if you were writing an adventure story. Because guess what… you were on an adventure and what better way to practice storytelling then through your own experiences! Get as much practice of telling details of the buildings, the people you met, the scenery because practice makes perfect!
Inspiration
The one item that pushes people to write most is inspiration. In fact, I've written many posts about it including, Taking Inspiration and Making It Your Own. Since you have experienced your trip and now have everything written down, you can always pull elements from these pages to place into your next story. Don't reinvent the wheel if you don't have too.
Final Thoughts
I highly suggest purchasing a small journal the next time you go on vacation. The dollar store as some great options or you can get the same journals I have here.
