What are Your Top Favorite Reads?
Over the years my bookshelf has changed a lot. There's been series, standalone novels, how to books, nonfiction, fiction, etc. I have a rule if I can't fit all my books on the bookshelf then it's time for me to part ways with a few. But over the years, there is always one shelf that stays the same. This shelf contains my most cherished books. Books that have made an impact on my life.
Once There Were Wolves
A more recent novel added to my collection in the last few years, this book hit home for me! This book contains everything I love in one. Murder, characters with unique characters or personalities, as well as amazing research details when it comes to wolves. This book has it all and I've never related more to a story then this one. I see Charlotte McConaghy going places in the future.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Series
In college I didn't have much free time to read. But when I did I picked up this series and couldn't put it down. In fact, I stayed up all one night reading the first book. This story had me on my toes but also realizing how storytelling should be told. Intense back story and great bizarre character development makes me wish I could read this series for the first time all over again.
Where The Red Fern Grows
An old classic, where the red fern grows is a book I hold dear to my heart. With over 30 reads I keep coming back for more when it comes to Old Dan and Little Ann. This story is the first time I really experienced pure innocent sadness in a plot. The emotions are raw and real leaving me weeping each time I read it. This novel kicked of my love of sad stories or song lyrics.
Twilight Saga
Most people probably don't have the Twilight Saga on their top list these days but it will always stay at the top for me. I've never done drugs before but after reading this series I think I have a similar experience as to what it feels like. Instantly pulled I. I couldn't put this story down. I went days without sleep or eating to see what would happen. The feeling of being engrossed in a story such as this one has never occurred again but one day I hope to find something just as good to bringing that feeling of joy back once more.
To Kill a Mockingbird
I've only read this book once many, many years ago, but I think of it often. This is one of the first times reading a book where taking a stance is an important lesson in a time where most people's hand were tied. All of this coming from the point of a young girl takes the plot to a whole new level and one I will not forget.
Other Contenders
There are some other great books out there I love. Here are some of the other contenders that didn't make it into the Top 5.
The Landlady
A short story written by Roald Dahl is one of the first stories I read with a twist ending. I will occasionally think back to it and how I want to include something similar in my writing.
Ender's Game
As someone who is strategic in gaming and everyday life, the strategies and storytelling are out of this world in Ender's Game giving it a top contender spot.
Tuck Everlasting
An oldie but a goodie, this novella is full of magic and the concept of family unity. This story is imaginative, cute, but also leans towards a heavier topic when it comes to eternal life.
