Do You Remember Writing Your the First Story?

For as long as I could remember I've loved the art of story telling. Mostly in person where you can get real time reactions. But the older I got the more I liked to write stories too. Authors have to start somewhere and I started at an early age. Here are some of the first stories I remember writing and if they would hold up today.

Little Lou Cleans the House

While on a road trip, my mom, her best friend, Shari, and I started talking about Shari's life. Throughout her childhood she had many fun and exciting adventures of which we all thought would be fun to write about. From the glove box. my mom pulled out a paper and pen of which we wrote down 30+ different titles related to Shari's adventures and her love of animals. Little Lou being the name of the character as that was Shari's middle name.

A few weeks went by and one day I had the urge to write a short story. Instead of using one of the 30 ideas we'd written down, I went rouge. I wrote a one page story on how Little Lou needed to clean the house with the help of her animal friends. I showed my mom and Shari. They both loved the concept.

It's been 25 years since I wrote that story. I still have the original pages and read it every few years as a reminder of what a great concept it was. Shari has gone on to write one of the ideas from that original night and had it published herself. She will probably have more in the works in the next few years but I can at least say I started it off and would probably publish the story myself using a different name for a character.

Dog Named Lucky

When I was 9 years old my dad and I went to the shelter where I somehow walked away with a labrador retriever. Back then, I wasn't creative in the naming process and of course named him Lucky(since he was lucky we were able to bring him to a knew home/it was a popular name for a dog then).

One day while my dad was at work, I was bored and decided to learn how to type on the computer. In doing so, I wrote Lucky's story on how we adopted him and took him home where he got up to some crazy adventures. My dad was nice enough to print it out and bind it for me, even if it was only three pages long.

Today the writing isn't great and the story would be boring to anyone not involved, but at least I have it to look back on and remember for the first time I got a dog.

Isis the Orca

I've talked about this story before but in 6th grade my teacher did not like me and criticized everything I wrote. Including this story. She pretty much marked it out with a big red X for the first draft. I ended up going home and rewriting the whole thing where an orca named Isis(name picked prior to current events) almost parishes with her pod after some crazy adventures. Don't worry they were all saved!

The story line is okay, but the best part is I made it a pop up book. I ended up drawing so many orcas to make them look like they were swimming in the ocean. This writing experience wasn't a fun one but it's definitely one I look back on often to show how far I've come and that I shouldn't allow other people to put me down.

Final Thoughts

I have come so far in my writing journey and I'm proud to look back on the stories that helped jump started my writing career. Do you have stories that you go back and read? Are they up to your standards or are they cringy?
